Recently, I was considering a job in England (instead of freelancing) and asked a friend who lives in Surrey (South East) about tax/living costs just to get an idea of how much I would need to earn to make a fair living. I thought maybe his answer might be helpful to you:
You pay about 1/3 of your income in tax and NI combined.
Rates about £100 per month
Rent about £450-600 per month

Rent about £1000 per month for a one-bedroom flat.
Gas, electricity, water, phone, internet combined about £100 per month
Food about £200 per month (per person, assuming you never eat out at restaurants)
