I've recommended trusted colleagues (some are Prozians) quite a few times either when the language combination or the subject matter is not within my areas of expertise. If I can’t accept an assignment, I don’t want to leave a regular customer without any options just because I can’t do it. I’ve also been recommended by colleagues and I find this highly motivating and rewarding: it warms my heart and heals my soul. It goes both ways.

I made that mistake once. The person I brought in to help ended up taking my job and I was thrown out.

Teehee...

I am more of Marie Teresa's opinion here.

I can see your side, though, Tom.

I thought I was helping my boss and that he would appreciate my ability to recruit new people. I used to be a very naive young man.

@Tom - I have also been there. Got terribly burned.

Bosses are the worst part of agencies. My first position had a dragon at the fore - she said I could correct her if I truly thought she was wrong, but then got pissy when I corrected her. She was never going to renew the contract and I knew it, but she wanted to string me along. Ach... Angie... if you are reading this - you were a real cow! Moo moo!

We probably shouldn't generalize, but I also had a rather unpleasant boss in my agency days. His eyes shot fire and his voice could be like thunder. I was very intimidated by him, being the unexperienced rookie I was.

I basically despised him, but at the same time I owe him my whole career. A very ambiguous character.

@Lieven

I don't know if you owe it to your boss - from what I read on here, you made it because of what's between your two ears!

To Angie I don't owe anything - she was a talentless translator and was looking for a friend. That somehow made me feel a bit sad, but it wasn't my problem.

When I can, but not often Sep 8, 2025

I have been very grateful when colleagues have recommended me, typically Danes asked to translate into English, or when we have collaborated on a couple of occasions where two fields of expertise complemented each other.

On one occasion I was disappointed - the agency had paid me a quite reasonable rate for some years, but offered my colleague a rate which he felt was totally unacceptable!

Sometimes the client has found another solution, but sometimes they have been glad to work with the colleague I suggested. I am not aware that I have lost any jobs that way, apart from those that were outside my scope in the first place.
