Diversify how? By venturing into languages and areas I haven't mastered and trusting the AI to do the work for me? No, thank you very much, I like to go to bed every day with a clear conscience…

the paradox truth is... Nov 7, 2024

LLMs (I think this is meant here, not for example Alexa) are the most helpful when used by people who know their field pretty well, as you need the right skills and knowledge to a) know exactly what you want, b) draft the right prompts and c) check, review and rework the output.
So, "diversify" in what sense?

Sure AI-tools can ... Nov 7, 2024

help freelance translators to diversify.

By making them aware that it's time to diversify out of the translation business, without further ado / before it becomes even worst.

Yes, but with a big caveat. You certainly do need to know how to ask the right question in the right way, but whatever any LLM throws back as answer I would still check everything in that "answer", preferably at first-hand sources. Answers plucked from LLMs are in essence a rehash of a rehash of a rehash ... in other word to be handled with extreme caution.

Diversify by offering your clients additional services Nov 7, 2024

True, there is little you can do with AI to enhance your translation services, especially when you work under NDA. Although generative AI does help a lot with transcreation and creative translation.

What I meant by diversification is offering subtitling, transcription, content adaptation and repurposing, and other services. The specialized AI-based tools simplify and speed up the process.

I see. Well, it's not that you couldn't do that without LLMs and AI based MT. And the tools only speed up the process if you know your field very well. So perhaps we should rather talk about efficiency enhancement.

In a way it's the same situation as with paper dictionaries, or web search engines. Anyone and everyone has access to them, but there are always some that are better than others at extracting relevant information from these tools.

If you find a way to be better than others at extracting what you need from LLMs, sure it will give you an edge. But then it's about your skills, that would have made a difference also with paper dictionaries or search engines, not about the LLMs per se.

AI tools alone don’t bring diversity to a freelance translator’s work Nov 7, 2024

Instead, they are more like aiding technologies that help with certain repetitive or basic tasks, but they don’t generate new areas of expertise or expand the translator's unique skill set.
The most important steps in diversifying are still driven by the translator's own skills, experience, and insights.
AI can assist us with productivity, but as we all know, it lacks the human adaptability, intuition, and creativity that are essential for a real diversification.

What I don't understand is ... Nov 7, 2024

... how are you going to have a competitive edge in the field you move into?

Everyone has access to AI tools, including people who already have skills and experience in whatever field you are moving into.

So how are you going to command a decent price if you are doing something that basically anyone can do, and lots of people can do better than you?
