I’ve been translating for over 30 years and I still don’t know what is the BEST strategy, so I’d say all the above plus consistently produce great work in order to keep my clients and to be recommended by them.

P.S. Being in the right place at the right time and… knowing what to do when you’re there.

I would say it is a mix of applying to agencies and jobs, networking with colleagues, online marketing to direct clients and also nudging dormant clients.

I've had very little work from any contacts on Proz, the same applies to contacting agencies.
All my best contacts have come as a result of working with translators in other language pairs who referred their clients to me for English.

There is no "best" marketing strategy that will work for everyone. It depends very much on who your ideal client is. If you are targetting tourism companies in your own town your strategy will be different to those hoping to work for large engineering companies in another country. Translation agencies require a different approach to direct clients.
