I don't know Sep 15, 2022

I haven't got a clue how many words I translate on average as I've never done the maths. I’d risk saying between 2,500 and 3,000, but it depends on the subject matter and on the language pair. Work runs in cycles, some days I have no work at all and then in others I work 10/12 hours (or even more...) Saturdays and Sundays included. For example, during this first September fortnight I had very little work to “compensate” for an extremely busy August: 35,695 words translated and 121,985 word... See more

In-house, I took the time to work it out and I averaged 3,800, discounting downtime (I always twiddled my thumbs on Monday morning).
I still calculate deadlines according to no more than 2,500 words a day, then manage to fit other stuff in around those 2,500 words, so I expect it's much the same now.

I never promise more than 2000 Sep 15, 2022

Today I'm hoping for 2000 in half a day - it's for a client I know well, and a file from a series of at least a dozen, so there should be no surprises, and terminology handy in the concordance, no lengthy searches...

But I never promise to do more than 2000 words a day, unless I really know what I am looking at. That includes proofreading and editing, and my source language is one of the less 'wordy'. Though you wouldn't believe it from the job I delivered a couple of days ago, 500

Though you wouldn't believe it from the job I delivered a couple of days ago, 5000+ words of guff about the government and the environment! Their money doesn´t smell, but it might save the environment a little if they cut the repetitions!

I read this as actual output rather than potential output.

I can generally churn out 3000 words a day but I've actually been doing more like 500 a day this week.

Normally 3,000 words a day Sep 15, 2022

I normally translate 2,500 to 3,000 words a day. Sometimes it may take a bit longer depending on how the complexity or technicality of words, because it involves the research of the meaning and the context.
Although, currently I have been receiving 2,300 words a day from my regular client and do them smoothly.

3000 words/day -- which is a long-term sustainable amount for me, as far as income, physical health and sanity are concerned.

It all depends on difficulty and the amount of research required.
Research is the bubble gum in the cogs, making all the difference.
And then there are texts that require special care in terms of style and tone, of course, which are also more time-consuming.
Easy texts: 6K-8K/day
Hard texts: 3K/day

This year my average output is 3200 words a day (based on 5 work days every week). But I've come to find out that it is not sustainable for me. I believe I should limit myself to 2000 or 2500 words a day. Last week I collapsed at night to due low blood pressure (I stopped working at nights long before. Somehow I had just woken up and wanted to browse the net for about an hour until I get sleepy again). So I decided to take 10 days off. The difference will not make me rich, but it will help prote... ...one million words!

Ahem.

Well, don’t you think you should maybe deliver more than a million words? A million words isn’t exactly very productive these days. DeepL alone translates over nine billion words a day.

Really? That’s a lot of words.

OK then, my average output per day is... one… hundred… billion words!
