I only provide interpretation services for a limited number of local clients. These are usually industrial process explanation/training sessions which take place on the shop floor.

I only provide translation and some other services related to translation like editing/revision/proofreading and localization. I have occasionally been involved in terminological research and glossary creation for clients. Over the years I’ve worked on a good number of transcreation projects but lately I have received none (due to the pandemic I suppose). I hold the greatest admiration for interpreters as immediacy is not one of my skills, I do need time…

It's such a pleasure to be on several fronts, train my skills in different conditions, and not doing always the same.

Nowadays, I tend to stick to translation and revision ("proofreading" services. Back in the day, I did a few stints as interpreter, but it can be rather stressful and demanding, and nowadays I would have to be offered a strong incentive, and would really only consider doing one-to-one, or small groups, rather than conference interpreting, which I feel is best left up to the specialists.

I used to provide both, but I found that interpretation is very demanding work. This was very exhausting because I was doing it in both directions - Italian/English and English/Italian. It means you're speaking continuously without even a pause for breath, as you switch instantaneously from one language to the other. So in the end I stopped being an interpreter and decided to concentrate on translation only.

I am not good at interpreting, if I try for friends and family - my son is far better. Many years ago, before I really considered translation, I took some preliminary tests to see if I would be suitable as an EU interpreter. They were looking for native speakers of Danish, but had few applicants, and I could perhaps if an English native speaker was needed later.

I did not get far. The comment was that I was probably one of those people who got high grades for languages at school, but spent all my exam time getting the details right, and never finished before time! I was not the kind of person they needed, but 'don't let us put you off written translation'.
On several occasions I have worked with a Danish colleague who really enjoys interpreting. He also translates well both ways: I have proofread for him when time was tight and we shared the translation. He prefers to let me translate, however, and he proofreads.
He simply thinks differently, and his whole approach is different. Working with him is a very good exercise, but I send all enquiries about interpreting to him, and he has sent several good translation jobs my way instead of doing them himself. ▲ Collapse

Officially, no, because I have no formal qualifications in interpreting, but I do it when somebody asks me. Usually it's for business meetings or foreign journalists who also need local assistance.
I certainly prefer interpreting to revision and other similar tasks usually associated with translation.

I used to work in the social services field between 1990 and 2001, and was sometimes called on to act as a Spanish-English interpreter for patients, doctors, and clients who were being trained on the job. Because I only did it "sometimes", I grew less and less interested in it, and in the social services for various reasons, anyway, and went back to my "former" passions, writing, literature, and translation, which this time around, I have stuck with for 20 years. It seems that those passions, even though they seemed to go underground for a while, never really died, and that they never will, as long as my mind and body stay healthy.

I’m very disappointed that nobody has pointed out that it is called interpreting, not interpretation, in UK English at least.
There are also too many options. “No” is redundant.
“I only provide translation”. As opposed to doing what to translation?
And if you have a round bed, can you get out of the wrong side? Have I finally hit upon the idea that will make me a billionaire?

When I work in the field, I spend the whole day (and as my practice shows, one day is not enough - it's sometimes a whole week). And I'm unavailable for my regular translation clients during this time. Which is... a not so good option.

I do provide desktop publishing services, as well as editing. Like others who have commented here, I'm too much of a perfectionist to be an interpreter.
