I endorse our colleagues' comments on this article. Regarding LINUX, I believe Trados now supports OpenOffice formats - I shall revert to this. As I pointed out in the title, the quality of the article warrants an update to take account of recent developments. Thank you, Greg, for such a well-thought-out exposé!

Good, but needs updating Feb 12, 2009

An article on technology gets out of date fast these days. (Even in 2005, I wouldn't have said that an Internet connection is "not necessary" for a translator--especially one who is a ProZ member!)
It would be worthwhile to mention PDF conversion and OCR tools.
OmegaT CAT tool is free and can operate on Linux and MAC. (If Trados does, that's news to me.)
