A good reason for a potential client reading this to pay you a poor rate.

I'm done being nice or humorous.
What is wrong with that obsessed, ill-bred mind that keeps pushing unrelated yet tacky, offensive and dangerously intrusive polls about our private and financial circumstances - passwords, savings etc? Didn't your parents teach you differently?
I'm proposing a counter poll:
How many reliable, human-oriented, decently paying clients did you obtain in 2025 via Proz directory:
One
More than one
Zero
Let's see the real side of Proz, something relevant for a change. | | | |

With all due respect, but then it's not you but your parents who maintain your lifestyle. | | | | | got to keep the nose to the grindstone | Sep 10, 2025 |

I am grateful for that! To be honest, I work and charge a good rate for my services, and I was glad to come back home and help my parents as they do with me.
Thank you for your honesty, Alexandra and Zea! | | | | | What does "all work" mean? | Sep 11, 2025 |
Is it the grimmest scenario? Let's say I'm a freelancer, and all my customers have abandoned me for good (or in my case, my employer has shown me the door, because, in fact, my workload over the last few months has been very scanty but I've been receiving my pay anyway). I'm back on the job market, expecting as I may well be to land a new job within weeks. No big deal, my lifestyle won't suffer much. And all I keep hearing is "No!" All doors closed forever. I'm back on the job market, expecting as I may well be to land a new job within weeks. No big deal, my lifestyle won't suffer much. And all I keep hearing is "No!" All doors closed forever. I take out a loan to pay for vocational training, use portions of the money to pay my bills and buy food and other portions to repay the loan itself—all to no avail. No jobs for me as it I were a criminal with a serious background. So, is the whole thing just a way to find out how many weeks', months', or years' worth of savings I have? In my case that has already happened and I have resigned myself to it.
Fortunately due to having no dependents, no debts, having worked hard in the good years, and having (just) enough pension income to cover my regular outgoings, I'll be OK. I have always had a frugal lifestyle and I don't intend to suddenly splurge on expensive holidays, cars, etc.
But I appreciate that others here have been totally or heavily reliant on translation as their only source of income, have dependents or other obligations, and have not been able to make provision for a rainy day and.....
Here's that rainy day. And the song, interpreted by a great interpreter:

You could also see it as an argument for: don’t bother me with your silly rates, I can do nicely even without you - and mean it. So that bottom feeders move on to easier targets and leave you alone. | | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: If you suddenly stopped receiving all work, how long could you maintain your current lifestyle? | TM-Town | Manage your TMs and Terms ... and boost your translation business
